Installing, Updating, and Uninstalling ActivClient for macOS

Note: Installing ActivClient requires administrator privileges on the workstation.
Important: Make sure no smart card reader or key is connected to the workstation before installing ActivClient.

Installing ActivClient

To install ActivClient:

  1. Locate and open the ActivClient .pkg installer.

  2. The ActivClient Installer will launch and guide you through the installation process.

  3. Click Install to complete the installation.

Note: During installation, macOS may display a system message indicating that the installer is attempting to modify system settings. This occurs because the ActivClient CTK component must disable the built-in Apple PIV card support to enable support for Crescendo smart cards and keys. You can safely ignore this message and proceed with the installation.
  4. If a token was inserted during installation, remove and reinsert it to ensure its contents are reloaded correctly.

  5. To register the CTK extension system-wide, ActivClient CTK is started automatically once. It can then be safely closed and removed from the Dock.

Two applications are installed as part of the ActivClient setup:

Updating ActivClient

To update ActivClient, simply install the new version:

  1. Locate and open the ActivClient .pkg installer.

  2. The ActivClient Installer will launch and guide you through the update process.

  3. Click Install to complete the update.

  4. If a token was inserted during update, remove and reinsert it to ensure its contents are reloaded correctly.

  5. To register the CTK extension system-wide, ActivClient CTK is started automatically once. It can then be safely closed and removed from the Dock.

Uninstalling ActivClient

Prerequisites: Before uninstalling ActivClient, make sure no token is inserted.

To uninstall ActivClient using Finder:

  1. Switch to the Finder, such as by clicking your desktop or clicking the Finder icon in the Dock.

  2. Find ActivClient Console, then click to select it.

  3. Use any of these ways to move the app to the Trash/Bin:

    • Drag the app to the Trash/Bin.

    • Select the app and choose File > Move to Trash/Bin from the menu bar.

    • Select the app and press Command-Delete on your keyboard.

  4. If you're asked for a username and password, enter the name and password of an administrator account on your Mac.

  5. In Finder, locate ActivClient CryptoTokenKit, then click to select it.

  6. Use any of these ways to move the app to the Trash/Bin:

    • Drag the app to the Trash/Bin.

    • Select the app and choose File > Move to Trash/Bin from the menu bar.

    • Select the app and press Command-Delete on your keyboard.

    Tip!
    • If you are unable to move the ActivClient CryptoTokenKit app to the Trash/Bin, disconnect all card readers and keys, and then restart the workstation.

    • Alternatively, you can run the killall ctkd command in Terminal instead of restarting.

  7. To delete both apps after moving them to the Trash/Bin, choose Finder > Empty Trash/Bin from the menu bar.

Important: After uninstalling the ActivClient CryptoTokenKit app, you must manually re-enable the native Apple PIV card support to allow macOS to recognize PIV-compatible tokens again.
Note: For detailed instructions on uninstalling ActivClient, refer to the macOS support page on app uninstallation.
