PIV Toolkit Overview

The ActivID CMS PIV Toolkit enables you to configure ActivID CMS to issue and manage PIV, PIV-I and CIV-compliant smart cards that conform to the U.S. Federal Government’s Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 201. PIV is an acronym for Personal Identity Verification. PIV-I is PIV-Interoperable, and CIV is an acronym for Commercial Identity Verification. This standard complies with the U.S. Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD) 12—a policy that requires a common identification standard for federal government employees and contractors.

The ActivID CMS installation includes a set of plug-ins, device profiles, database extensions, and configuration files designed to support such PIV, PIV-I and CIV deployments. These components are referred to as the ActivID CMS PIV Toolkit.

Specifically, the PIV Toolkit contains:

  • PIV Enrollment/Digital Signatory Plug-In – For formatting and signing of user data sent to the card (for example, CHUID, fingerprint, or facial image).

  • Biometric Verification Plug-In – For fingerprint verification of users during PIV card activation.

  • Static Data Plug-In – Used internally in ActivID CMS to personalize user data (CHUID and demographic data) on the PIV card.

  • Notification Plug-In – Sends notification messages upon device issuance and activation.

  • PIV card profiles – Used to create device policies for PIV and PIV-I-compliant device issuance.

  • CIV card profiles – Used to create device policies for CIV-compliant device issuance.

  • PIV Metadata database creation scripts – Required for ActivID CMS to store additional PIV data.

  • Additional tools for testing of the PIV configuration, such as sample Card Production Request (CPR).
