General Safety Precautions

  • Keep the area around the system clean and free of clutter.

  • The appliance weighs approximately 20 lbs. when fully loaded. When lifting the appliance, two people at either end should lift slowly with their feet spread out to distribute the weight. Always keep your back straight and lift with your legs.

  • Place the chassis top cover and any system components that have been removed away from the system or on a table so that they won't accidentally be stepped on.

  • While working on the system, do not wear loose clothing such as neckties and unbuttoned shirt sleeves. These can come into contact with electrical circuits or be pulled into a cooling fan.

  • Remove any jewelry or metal objects from your body, which are excellent metal conductors that can create short circuits and harm you if they come into contact with printed circuit boards or areas where power is present.

  • After accessing the inside of the system, close up the system and secure it to the rack unit after ensuring that all connections have been made.

Considerations and Warnings

  • Ambient operating temperature—If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, then the ambient operating temperature of the rack environment might be greater than the ambient temperature of the room. Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the equipment in an environment compatible with the maximum-rated ambient temperature.

  • Reduced airflow—Mount equipment into a rack so that the amount of airflow required for safe operation is not compromised. Keep the fan inlet and outlet areas clear to maintain adequate airflow.

  • Mechanical loading—Mount equipment into a rack so that a hazardous condition does not arise due to uneven mechanical loading.

  • Circuit overloading—Power supply wiring is required in order to protect the connection of the equipment to the power supply circuitry and minimize the effect of any possible overloading of circuits. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used when addressing this concern.

  • Reliable ground—All electrical wirings should be in accordance with the prevailing national codes. Maintain a reliable ground at all times. To ensure this, ground the rack itself. Specific attention should be paid to power supply connections other than the direct connections to the branch circuit (that is, the use of power strips). To ensure proper grounding, you must connect the Validation Responder Appliance with a UL-listed three-conductor power cord to a grounded power source.

  • Rack Mounting—If you are using an equipment rack, then make sure to bolt the rack frame securely to the floor. This gives the rack physical stability and eliminates the possibility of the rack falling over, resulting in injury to personnel or damage to equipment.
