Installing the Hardware Appliance

This section describes how to install the hardware ActivID® Validation Responder Appliance.

Warning! To avoid injury to personnel or damage to equipment when you install and power on this equipment, observe all normal safety warnings and precautions.
Prerequisites:

You must have the following items available:

  • PS/2 or USB keyboard,

  • Monitor with a VGA connector, and

  • Ethernet cable.

You must also have the following information available:

  • A hostname for the Validation Responder Appliance,

  • Your network domain name,

  • Network configuration type: DHCP or static, and

  • OCSP Response List URLs.

Statically configured networking requires the following additional information:

  • DNS servers IP addresses,

  • Validation Responder Appliance IP address, and

  • Subnet mask Default gateway IP address.

Security Consideration

  • The Validation Responder Appliance contains no security-sensitive information.

  • An attack on a Validation Responder Appliance could result in a denial of service to relying parties until the system breach is rectified.

  • Validation Responder Appliances should be treated as standard, high-value servers, and they must be properly secured using security best practices.

  • Physical access control should be implemented to prevent compromise of the physical host.

Installation Steps (and Power Up)

  1. Connect the keyboard to the USB port on the back.

  2. Connect the monitor to the blue video connector on the back.

  3. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to a switch or router on your network.

  4. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the RJ-45 jack labeled “1” located to the right of the system status indicator (that is, to the right of the blue video connector).

  5. Connect the enclosed power cable to a power source, and then connect the other end to the Validation Responder Appliance.

  6. Briefly press the power switch (located to the left of the two USB connectors) to power on the unit.

Shutting Down and Restarting the Appliance

The following notes apply to restarting and shutting down the Validation Responder Appliance:

  • To shut down the Validation Responder Appliance, log on to the Management Console as a user with admin privileges, and click Shut Down the Validation Responder Appliance on either the Reboot or Shut Down page.

  • To restart the Validation Responder Appliance, log on to the Management Console as a user with admin privileges, and click Reboot the Validation Responder Appliance on either the Reboot or Shut Down page.

  • In the event of a power failure, if the Validation Responder Appliance was on when the power failed, then it will come back on when power is restored, and the login screen will be displayed. If the Validation Responder Appliance was off when the power failed, then it will remain off when power is restored.
